Think you can’t run the Wigan 10K?

I started running round about the same time in my life that you did.

When I started, I like you, was a young child. Why did we run? Probably several reasons, but they likely included running to get to things that are fun or to food quicker than we would by walking (or to beat your friends there). The other main reason is because it made us feel good. The freedom of running; the effort followed by the satisfaction.

I still run for the same two reasons. Don’t get me wrong, there have been periods of years when I have not run but I have come back to it for the same reason. I also now run for other reasons but the key theme is the same.

Running is one of those things that humans are pre-programmed to do. It’s one of our two methods of built in transportation, and alongside it’s more popular, but very close neighbour walking, it can make you feel really good.

On the 4th of September this year, it is the Wigan 10k. Over 1200 participants took part last year with times varying from 2 hours through to just over 30 minutes. This really is an event for everybody. Many of us can walk at 3 miles an hour so that’s the 10k done in 2 hours. If you walk at 4 mph then 1 hour 30. If you add in some jogging then the time will start to reduce further.

Studio One Yoga have entered a team into this event every year for the last nine years.

We want you to join us in the event. Yes, it is a race but it really is the taking part that counts. I am pretty sure that none of us are going to win so that puts us all into the category of doing it for fun and to feel good. Alongside that you will get:

  • An immense source or pride in completing the course.

  • Helping raise money for Studio Ones charity – INSERT LINK HERE

  • A good atmosphere on the day. A real carnival feel to the day with loads of supporters on the streets.

  • A trip to the pub afterwards.

What do I need to start?

  • A pair of trainers suited to walking and jogging

  • Start walking more. To the shop, to the studio, park further from your destination.

  • A plan – maybe try Couch to 5k NHS which is a great place to start - COUCH TO 5K

  • A chunk of discipline

Over the next few months I will be aiming to give you some more thoughts and pointers. Stay tuned for the next instalment.

Caveat

This series of blog articles has not been written by an expert, simply someone wishing to share their thoughts and experiences that might inspire (or put off) others to partake in an activity that helps me thrive as a human being. If you feel any discomfort or pain when running, just stop. Start walking, catch a bus or phone a friend for a lift!
